SHRM Rio Grande Valley History

SHRM-RGV Chapter 390 stands for the Society for Human Resource Management - Rio Grande Valley. Since being chartered as a chapter of the American Society of Personnel Managers in 1979 with just 7 members, the chapter has grown to nearly 120 members today. The original chapter's purpose was to serve as a networking organization for the support of HR Manager’s in 1977 when the first "Maquila" (Manufacturing) organizations started moving into the Rio Grande Valley.  Since then, SHRM Rio Grande Valley's purpose is to serve the needs of all HR Professionals, Small Business Owners and Managers, and Office Managers throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

In 1985, SHRM-Rio Grande Valley supported the development and inception of the student chapter (Chapter 5228) of SHRM at Pan American University which is now The University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg.  Today, SHRM Rio Grande Valley proudly works with the student chapter creating mentoring partnerships between HR Professionals and students who are interested in the human resource profession.

The chapter is an affiliate of The Society for Human Resource Management (www.shrm.org), the premier HR professional organization representing over 250,000 members worldwide. SHRM Rio Grande Valley has won 5 distinguished Superior Merit Awards and over 8 Merit Awards from the National SHRM organization since its inception.
